UWIC Gaelic Football
Céad míle fáilte, and welcome to UWIC’s newest sports club. Gaelic Football offers students the chance to compete in Ireland’s biggest sport here in Britain, and welcomes amateurs looking to play a new sport and join a great social scene as well as Irish natives looking for a little corner of home! Gaelic football is very easy to pick up and anybody wanting to take part will be made to feel at home straight away and will meet friends for life, sharing memories on the pitch as well as of it.
We train 3 times a week, Wednesday evening (7-9pm) and Sunday mornings (11am-12.30pm) on the Track Infield and Fridays (8-10pm on the Astro), both on UWIC Cyncoed Campus. Sessions will be led by an experienced manager, and any new players that want that extra bit of help will find our experienced players more than happy to oblige. We play in the British Universities Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) Midlands League, and regularly travel to the Midlands, as well as welcome Midlands teams to Cardiff to take part. The 2010-2011 season was our debut season and we exceeded every expectation by finishing the league undefeated and narrowly losing out in the British Universities Championship Semi Final, something which we intend to improve on next year.
The social scene at UWIC GAA is of vital importance, and we will regularly meet to for a bit of craic as a team. Highlights will include the Cardiff Blitz Weekend, Nantes, Championship Weekend and of course the big one...St Patrick’s Day!
