Sŵn Festival Day Preview: Fri 23rd Oct

Sŵn Festival Day Preview – Friday 23rd October

Check the full day-to-day line-up here. This article merely summarises personal highlights and potential plans, but I hope to make it prove a semi-useful guide for all those wanting one.

Friday, for me at least, will be a day more of discovery and learning, than a day of running around frantically to find the bands I want to see. The Friday line-up, on the whole, hosts bands that I am unaware of, but I'll still do my best here to give you a few hints and tips on who you don't want to miss.

My evening of Swn fun will begin in The City Arms, with Swn Bingo, which is due to take place between 1700-1845. That is, if I have a friend to go with. What sort of loser goes to Bingo on their lonesome? Not I.

City Arms then lays host to the Dirty Pop DJs. Confused? I was too. Apparently Dirty Pop is a genre; mixing the best of pop, dance, r’n’b, electronica, and house music. If this gets your sympathetic nervous system flowing, then get yourself in The City Arms any time between 1900 and 2200 and ‘boogey on down’. That is what the kids do these days, is it not?

Personally, I’ll be heading to Clwb Ifor bach to watch Talons (1930-2000) following the bingo, who I saw around a year ago in the same venue supporting the brilliant Gallops. Expect heavy post-rock, plenty of noise, a pinch of math-rock, periods of instrumental, and a leg-kicking violinist.

The next hour for me involves a nosey around various random venues, until 2100 where I’ll drag myself to Y Fuwch Goch (across the road form Clwb) to catch the 30 minute set of Swanton Bombs. Swanton Bombs are starting to catch the attention of the right people (and plenty of those wrong ’uns, probably) as of late, and are currently in support of the fantastic Girls. Expect catchy indie rock from this London duo, for whom 2010 should be a good year.

Y Fuwch Goch will be the resting place of me for the next hour also. Not because I know of the band on after Swanton Bombs, but to ensure there is no chance of me being rejected for the venue from it being over-capacity by the time Girls are due on stage. As it happens, the band, The Longcut, wedged in between Swanton Bombs and Girls sound pretty decent. Chilled experimental indie rock. Hmm.

Y Fuwch Goch at 2315 brings the band I am most looking forward to for the Swn weekend, and probably the whole year in terms of live music. You’ve probably guessed it is Girls by the amount I have gone on about them, no? Following some deservedly positive reviews as of late (9/10 – Pitchfork), Girls have kicked up a media storm. Not only is debut album, ‘Album, quite brilliant, the story behind front man Christopher Owens is also incredible. He was brought up in the Children of God cult, whose beliefs on medicine led to the death of his older brother as a baby. His Dad was a bit of a prick, it seems fair to say, and forced his mother to prostitute herself on occasion. Owens, being the wonderful atheist that he still is, ran away from the cult, and bumped into a millionaire who took a liking to him, tucking him comfortably under his wing, as Pitchfork put it so well (don’t forget to reference the person you copy from, kids). Expect a heavily Beach Boys influenced set from the San Francisco base duo, whose songs are upbeat musically, but somewhat depressing lyrically. Surf pop and garage rock meet to incredibly effects, with also the odd bit of shoegaze chucked in there somewhere. I’m excited.

To finish the evening off, we have Retro’s October band of the month, Strange News from Another Star at The Model Inn from 0030-0115; the only band to still be playing at this hour, so you'd be a fool not to go and see them. Featuring UWIC student and ridiculously fast runner Harry Jones on the drums, the legendary bearded one Mark Foley (also of Martin Carr) on bass, and the knitwear shop manager Jimmy Watkins as the craaaaazy front-man, Strange News from Another Star play fast paced alternative rock, with experimental and blues-like twists. Expect it to be a sweat-drenched set, with some double-denim wear from the forefronts of fashion. If you don't go to this, not only will Harry run rings around you, but Jimmy will jump over your head in his oh-so fancy socks made out of pure cashmere, or something.
Have a fun and smelly evening, boys and girls. Feel free to contact us about any recommendationsyou may have, and any reviews of the bands you see.
