► Friday Diary
Friday was a significantly shorter musical affair starting (much later than Thursday’s museum show), with The Longcut at a busy Y Fuwch Goch. With a drummer on vocals, the three-piece play what is the meeting place of indie, post-rock and electro dancey sort of stuff. Enjoyable, but when you have as much music at your fingertips as the Swn go-ers did, it wasn’t great. The rest of crowd enjoyed it nonetheless!
Y Fuwch Goch continued to be my shelter from the rain, with entertainment from Swanton Bombs, for what was their final gig of their tour supporting Girls. The youthful looking guitar-drums duo opened with a soft, drum-free track. Introduce the drums, however, and it is a very different story. Think The Black Keys meet Razorlight; sped up blues rock with a little hint of pop. A very enjoyable set; impressive drumming, bluesy garage rock guitar work and pleasant vocals. And all of it was fully enjoyed by tour-mate Girls front-man Christopher Owens.
Indeed it was Christopher Owens up at Y Fuwch Goch next, fronting Girls, whilst clothed in a bright red dress. Opening with Laura, Girls played a highly enjoyable show, playing the vast majority of the tracks off of critically acclaimed debut album ‘Album’ to a completely packed venue, with highlight possibly being the My Bloody Valentine tinged ‘Morning Light’. Album track ‘Headache’ was slightly disappointingly performed minus the Hawley-esque vocals that Owens adopts in the recorded version, but this is probably the only criticism that could be made of the set featuring four members, opposed to the duo we know Girls as on record. And in quirky fashion, Girls were joined on stage by Swanton Bombs to perform a cover of ‘True Love Will Find You In The End’ by the great Daniel Johnston to wrap up a brilliant show, leaving both the crowd and the bands with huge grins.
Strange News from Another Star was the final act to perform of the evening, gracing the stage at The Model Inn gone midnight. The Cardiff band, clad in their usual double-denim, greeted the crowd with a mini press-up competition, before heading into their blues influenced heavy indie rock sound, with front man Jimmy sporting a delightfully fitting Tesco bag as neckerchief. In what turned out to be an incredibly sweat-drenched affair, the energetic three-piece, with Mark Foley of Future of the Left fame, played a truly rock’n’roll set with the crowd completely captivated; including guest-musicians whilst Jimmy and drummer Harry wrestled on the floor, whilst the crowd were taking part in a minute of moshing. Awesome.
