Fightstar @ Millennium Music Hall (Gig review)

GRAB Promotions Presents… Fightstar @ Millennium Music Hall
08/02/2010
By Thea Wise

What better than to kick off a UK tour than in our home-town of Cardiff? The Fightstar boys have a busy schedule ahead of them, and they sure as hell can expect to rock, sweat and party very hard along the way.

Despite the fact this gig took place on a freezing cold Monday evening, once I got inside the venue I was pleasantly surprised to see a big crowd there to support the band - at the same time wiping the dew from my brow in relief that I wasn’t the only one who wasn’t a chubby-thirteen-year-old-boy, ready to mosh until my hearts content.

Charlie Simpson and his crew enlightened the stage just after 9.30, giving the crowd enough time to prepare themselves for something quite spectacular.
I’ve never been a die hard Busted fan (yeah, yeah!), but Charlie has managed to successfully transform himself from posh-boy to mosh-boy. What really struck me was his passion for pure, raw and stimulating rock music. Influenced by the likes of the ‘Deaftones’ and ‘Biffy Clyro’, the riffs and rhythms produced by the band are really something to be proud of.

The Millennium Music Hall is a small and intimate setting, which energised me just at the thought; not only could I get closer to Charlie, but I was happy to know that the deafening drums and guitar would linger in my ears for days. However the volume turned out to be very disappointing, especially considering how close I was to the speakers. The drums, although incredible, simply drowned out any vocals, which was a shame because Fightstar are the creators of some very poetic and beautiful lyrics.

As for the set list, they played many old and new tracks, but they were keen on getting as many tracks from their new album ‘Be Human’ in to the airwaves as possible. In between fighting off the human-bumper-car-mosh-pit, my particular highlights were the performances of ‘Paint Your Target’, ‘Mercury Summer’, and their new track ‘Blood is Black’.

As the smell of B.O began to excrete into the air, the music got heavier and the crowd got sweatier. Beer was being spilt, girls were getting pushed, but overall I don’t think anyone left feeling disappointed. The pretty boy gone bad ethos of the band was metaphorically fitting to the venue…transformed from Bar Risa to the slightly rough round the edges Millennium Music Hall.

Not the longest set ever, but the band were clearly happy with the crowd’s response. Definitely a band worth watching, the sheer passion and musical talent could be felt beaming from the stage; once again making a comeback to my I-pod playlist.
