Kendo Society

KENDO SOCIETY

New - Dates and times for Kendo sessions!!!

The Kendo Society will be in the Dance Studio (Cyncoed) on:

Thursdays - 8 - 10pm

Sundays - 10am - 1pm, or sometimes 6 - 8pm (check before turning up as times will differ on different weekends!)

What is Kendo you ask?  The simplest way to describe it is this: Kendo = The Way of the Sword.  Often described as Japanese fencing, it is Japan's oldest, safest and one of its most traditional martial arts.  Kendo is fully armoured fencing using bamboo swords.

There are two different types of training in Kendo; one involves the use of a wooden sword called a ‘bokken’ and is used to practice set patterns called ‘kata’ or ‘kihon’ to build up skills in distance, timing and correct attacking.  The other form of practice involves the armour and a bamboo sword called a ‘shinai’.  This is where the contact comes in and practice becomes about how to put everything you have learnt into practice.

Kendo has no boundaries of age, gender or disability.  My teacher is now 70 years old and I still cannot beat him!  There is a Kendoka (Kendo Practitioner) in America that has reached 3rd Dan (3rd grade) and has no legs!  There is no reason to not do kendo, it is open to everyone!

The Kendo society aim is to build upon being the first university Kendo Society in Wales, and then to take students to the British University Kendo Competition to compete!
