Cardiff Met AU award students with Sporting Scholarships

The Athletic Union has historically awarded sporting scholarships for the elite athletes attending the university. In recent years the amount of funding available for our athletes has increased with the introduction of the position of Director of Cardiff Met Sport and which has seen a significant rise in the number of scholarships awarded to students. When these scholarships launched they were provided for 12 students, all studying within the School of Sport. Years later and the Athletic Union provide over 50 scholarships, with 12 of these studying in School's outside of the School of Sport. The scholars compete in 15 different sports including Rugby, Netball, Triathlon, Boxing, Karate, Cycling and Squash. 

Mike Davies, Chief Executive of the Student Union, addressed the guests and scholars informing the attendees that Cardiff Metropolitan Athletic Union has over 1000 members and is the top Athletic Union in Wales. He explained the importance of the scholars in our BUCS competitions and how they help us to remain a top 20 ranked University in BUCS rankings. 

    

Dave Cobner, Director of Sport at Cardiff Met, spoke of the continuing success achieved by Cardiff Met Students and Alumni. Specific attention was payed to this years Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, which included over 50 current and past students for Team Wales including scholars Ieuan Lloyd (Swimming), Mica Moore (Athletics) and Bethan Dyke (Netball). The provision supplied through the scholarship for these athletes ensures they can study and compete at the highest level. Private medical cover is supplied alongside physiotherapy, free gym membership and use of all Cardiff Met facilities. 

Cardiff Met Alumni and Olympic Gold Medalist Lynn Davies spoke fondly of his time at the university and expressed the reputation of excellence that the University holds in Sport. He explained the legacy and tradition that the scholars are continuing through their achievements in sport and wished them the best for the future.
