We’re going to finish our More Than Work Week feature looking at students in employment on a high today, with award winning student Robert Mant. Rob utilised the services provided by UMAX and the Students’ Union and won a national award for his work.
Rob is 21 and this year won National Award for Step Up to Leadership at the Student Employer of the Year (SEOTY) awards. Rob was part of the highly successful Alumni Telephone Fundraising Campaign run by Cardiff Met University. Currently in his second year of the Sports Coaching degree at the School of Sport, Rob says he owes a lot to Alice Sockett, the rest of the phone fundraising team and UMAX. “I saw the job advertised on the UMAX JobShop and applied, I had to leave an answerphone message as round one of the application and then had a phone interview after that.” Rob was responsible for making connections with the universities alumni, highlighting exclusive alumni offers and benefits and collecting statistics on what ex-students are doing now. Rob highlighted the benefits of undertaking work whilst still a student “The role was great, I was never confident on the phone until this job and it helped me to understand what I want to do in the future from talking to the alumni and getting advice off them.”
Throughout the week, we have had top tips from other students (Rowan, Chelsea, Chris, Anastazy) and Rob was happy to share his. “Be organised and plan your time carefully, make sure you let your housemates know where you’ll be so they don’t worry and if they’re good friends they’ll help you out when you’re busy, maybe cook for you as long as you do the same back for them. Make use of all the resources you have, friends, family, the university services and most of all, enjoy it!”
