Volunteering for me is always a great conversation starter in job interviews, employers saw that I had volunteered and always ask me questions on what I did. I first started volunteering when I was at college where I volunteered for the Acorns Children’s Hospice. My role was Pool Spotter in their hydrotherapy pool where I effectively acted as a life guard for the children when they were receiving treatment in the pool. By volunteering, I was able to gain experience and show that I am hardworking and committed. After a while, the Hospice then offered me a part time paid job where I worked alongside the Bank Nursing staff.

Volunteering allowed me to add skills to my CV, for instance, communication and organisation. It also made my CV stand out as it showed I was able to give up some of my time to support a good cause.

UMAX advertises a variety of internal, external, one-off and on-going opportunities for you to get involved in. I would definitely recommend having a look at what volunteer opportunities are available as it is rewarding, looks good on your CV and is a great way to meet new people. You can develop transferable skills and gain experience that will make you stand out from other graduates.
