SU Societies & SU Sport Clubs Elections

Welcome to the SU Society and SU Sport Club Elections page!

This page provides guidance for running Committee Elections or By-Elections within SU Societies and SU Sport Clubs.

If you are looking to vote in an SU Society or SU Sport Club election, you must first purchase a membership for that group. Only paid members are eligible to vote and help decide the future committee of their Society or Sport Club.

Election Timeline

1. Nominations

The nominations period should be announced by the current committee and remain open for one week.

During this time, eligible members can put themselves forward for committee positions.

We recommend using a Microsoft Form to collect nominations, which can then be shared with your membership. This provides a clear record of candidates and the roles they wish to stand for.

Candidates should provide:

  • Their full name (or the name they are commonly known by)
  • Their student email
  • The committee position they are standing for
  • An optional short manifesto introducing themselves and outlining why they are standing

2. Voting

Once nominations have closed, the current committee should announce the list of candidates to all members.

The voting period must remain open for one week.

Again, a Microsoft Form is an easy way to collect votes. For every committee position, members must be given the option to vote for:

  • The nominated candidates
  • RON (Re-Open Nominations)

RON ensures members have the opportunity to indicate that they do not wish to elect any of the current candidates for a particular role.

3. Annual General Meeting (AGM)

All SU Societies and SU Sport Clubs are required to hold an Annual General Meeting (AGM) by the 31st May.

The AGM should:

  • Present the outcome of the committee elections
  • Confirm the incoming committee
  • Provide members with an opportunity to discuss the Society or Sport Club and its future plans
  • Complete any other constitutional business required by your group
