For any writers early in their career, having a strong CV can be a tough hurdle to overcome. As a result, we've created a flexible option for graduates to get work experience writing for Cardiff-based entertainment news website Tuppence Magazine.

We’ve tried to come up with something that is unlike other work experience opportunities, by making the initiative completely flexible, so that you can work around your other commitments, but still build your employment history. It allows you to contribute as much or as little as you can, while giving you your own online portfolio of published work on the website. As a result, you can tap into the thousands of visitors we get each month and create an audience for your writing.

There’s no need to take weeks out of your existing schedule, as the experience can all be done from your own laptop, PC or tablet from home. This means that you won’t need to take time out from any early career options you have. In addition to your work being published online, having a personal online portfolio and getting experience to add to your CV, you'll also be able to gain insight from our writing, editorial and marketing processes. All articles will receive feedback and ideas on how to write for an online audience, as well as editorial notes on style, grammar, structure and content.

Another big hurdle in the job market is having a number of references on your CV to give employers reassurance that you can make a positive impact to their business. While your tutor will be a good option in the first instance once you’ve graduated from university, it’s useful to include at least one reference from a relevant employer. Graduates that have positively contributed to our work experience initiative will also be able to add us as one of their references to help with this.

To apply to take part, simply email contacttuppence@googlemail.com and we’ll send over editorial guidelines for you to get started and create your online portfolio page. We will also send you some useful training notes on best practice and further reading about writing digital content and how to build yourself a name online.
