United Purpose operates a small co-ordinating office in Cardiff, Wales. This office is the administrative and financial centre for all its overseas programmes and it plays a critical supporting role for the ten country offices.

Working directly alongside the Strategic Support Manager, the Strategic Events Volunteer will play a key and exciting role working across UK teams, Country Programmes and external stakeholders.

Volunteers have played an increasingly important role alongside paid staff in helping UP achieve its objectives in the last few years. We aim to offer volunteers varied tasks, and genuine appreciation of the valuable roles they perform.

 

  • Role title: Strategic Events Volunteer    
  • Reporting to: Olivia Sawyer Strategic Support Manager
  • Location: Flexible. Ideally 1 day/ month in UP Office, 14 Cathedral Road, Cardiff, CF119LJ, UK
  • Dates: 1 or more days per week (3 month minimum)
  • Start Date: ASAP J

 

The Role

The primary objective of this role is to support the CEO and Strategic Support Manager in event planning, internal communications (blogs, newsletters), project management, relationship management and administration. This will be a varied and dynamic role. The following is not an exhaustive list, but illustrates areas of involvement.

Work closely with the Strategic Support Manager and other volunteers to:

  • Plan and help organise an global gathering of leaders across the organisation in August
  • Be the point of contact with speakers, stakeholders and venue coordinators
  • Follow up on all action points from debriefs, event surveys, internal meetings, external meetings and so on
  • Look for ways to continually improve internal communications across the organisation
  • Organise a calendar of social events
  • Other tasks as they come up

We operate a flexible volunteer scheme and the role can be shaped to individual interests, skills and experience.

 

Skills and experience

We welcome applications from volunteers at all stages of their career - college and university students, recent graduates, professionals and newly retired.

Essential

  • Good written and verbal English.
  • IT literate, including familiarity with Microsoft Outlook and Word.
  • Good analytical skills -  ability to distil large amounts of information without using jargon
  • Good interpersonal skills and a friendly and flexible approach to teamwork
  • Disciplined and committed
  • Good administrative and organisational skills

Desirable

  • Experience of working in an office environment
  • Experience researching and/ or writing grant applications
  • Knowledge of development issues
  • Experience of working overseas
  • Working knowledge of French, Spanish or Portuguese
