On the 18th November, Cardiff Met Students’ Union travelled to Varna University of Management (VUM) in Bulgaria. VUM has over 100 students studying School of Management Cardiff Metropolitan University courses.

During the visit, the Students’ Union participated in a press conference on the theme of ‘why the student voice matters.’ The event was attended by Bulgarian national media, VUM staff and students as well as staff from other universities in Bulgaria. At the conference, Cardiff Met SU explained how the representation structure at Cardiff Metropolitan University works. The Students’ Union staff also gave a presentation to students and had discussions with staff and students on how the SU is able to support them.

Stefan Kelly, the President of Cardiff Met Students’ Union said about the visit, “the trip proved to be an extremely valuable and productive visit not just for us but for the students and staff at the institution. Having the chance to share our experiences about the importance of the student voice through a press conference/presentation, and then conducting a feedback session with the staff and students allowed them to experience how the student voice can be expressed in a constructive manner.”

He added, “We were also extremely happy to bounce ideas around with their newly re-established student council, and share how we operate as a Student’s Union in Cardiff to help them establish means in which they can grow and really capture the student voice within their institution.”

Alongside Stefan, the Students’ Union Vice-President, Bradley Woolridge attended the visit as well as  SU staff member Amy Campbell and Phillip Smith (Partnership Intern).

With around 7000 students studying at partner universities all over the world, Cardiff Met SU is still there to support and represent these students even though they are in a different country. The Students’ Union aims to further link its students studying in Cardiff with those studying abroad. Later this term, we’ll be making short videos with Cardiff Met based student reps so that they can share their university experience with all of our partner students. We’ll then be inviting all partners to make their own video to share.
