My UMAX-SU Events

Over the past few weeks, during my shift at UMAX FoH I have been busy working on numbers events with the students union. Some of these events include Mental Health Awareness Week, the Movember Campaign, Crimbo Bingo in aid of Cancer Research Wales and the UMAX FoH Christmas Party. These have all been a delight to work on, and I hope I work on more in the future.

Over the past few weeks, during my shift at UMAX FoH I have been busy working on a number of events with the Students’ Union. Some of these events include Mental Health Awareness Week, the Movember Campaign, Crimbo Bingo in aid of Cancer Research Wales and the UMAX FoH Christmas Party. These have all been a delight to work on, and I hope I work on more in the future.

Now to explain some of them in a bit more detail…

The Movember Campaign is a month long event trying to raise awareness of Men’s Health such as prostate cancer. The aim of the Campaign is for men to be clean shaven on the 1st November and then abstain from shaving until the end of the month, instigating people to ask about the moustache and thereby talking about men’s health.

Over the last week of October the UMAX and SU staff tried to sign up as many people as possible to join the Cardiff Met SU team for the Campaign, signing up a total of 56 people. Each person is asked to try and raise at least £10 as a goal to go towards Men’s Health.

Also at the beginning of November SU President Josh and Vice President Stef held a pub quiz night in order to raise extra funds for the Campaign. I feel the Campaign is going really well with the team raising £485 so far!

Crimbo Bingo is being held on the 4th December in Zen Bar. It is an event run by the SU in aid of their chosen charity of the year Cancer Research Wales. The event will be a fun filled night of 6 bingo games, fantastic prizes and a sparkle of Christmas cheer. Tickets are £5 and are available online at the Cardiff Met SU Events page. So far, in the run up to the event I have had a meeting with the Cancer Research Wales charity. This have given me a background of what type of events they put on and that the funds raised are going to a worthwhile cause and the difference the donation will make. I have also been out working with Kirsten and Amy trying to collect donations from companies that could be used as prizes for the bingo and raffle. This experience was good to do as a group as I always felt nervous asking companies for a donation. I now feel more confident to do it in the future. I feel helping to organise this event has put my degree as an events manager into practice, and has confirmed my enjoyment when organising events.

Finally, I'm in the process of organising the UMAX FoH Christmas Party. I'm hoping it will be held in Zen during December. We'll be having Christmas lunch, a short meeting to ensure everyone is working on the same page next term and a few Christmasy games or Secret Santa. I'm really looking forward to getting in the Christmas spirit with everyone. I think Christmas is all about getting together with friends, family and colleagues to celebrate and is always an exciting time on my Christmas calendar!
