The 2015 Western Conference Cup Finals, held at Exeter University, saw two Cardiff Met teams make it all the way to the final game. Last year saw our Netball 2nd and Women’s Badminton 1st teams fall at the final hurdle so this year our Men’s Lacrosse 1st  and Men’s Badminton 1st team were determined to go one better and take the cup.

First up was Men’s Badminton which saw a clash of their Welsh rivals from Western 1B. The opposition was Swansea Universities 1st team who finished top of Western 2B by pushing Cardiff Met into the runner-up spot. Having narrowly lost 5-3 in the opening fixture of the league season, and an then even closer affair in the return fixture which ended in a 4-4 draw. With Captain, Joe Giampalma unavailable due to academic commitments, the Archers outfit knew they were in for a tough matchup, one in which every game and point would be crucial. And so this proved to be the case as the match points ended in a 4-4 cliff hanger again. The result was then to be determined on count back of sets won in each game played; following a tense few minutes, Cardiff Met were eventually announced as Conference Cup Champions winning 9-8!

It was now up to our Men’s Lacrosse team to put the icing on the cake in their matchup with Bristol Universities 2nd who finished mid table in Western Conference 2A – the same conference in which our men had a faultless season as they took they secured promotion in top spot with a 7-0 record. When the two teams met on the 29th October, Cardiff Met came out as comfortable winners with a score line of 14-8, however, a lot can change over the course of a season and with their previous meeting being only the second game of the season the Archers weren’t allowing themselves to get complacent. Ruthless play from start to finish saw the Archers put an impressive 13 goals past their opposition with only 6 coming in return. Cardiff Met were crowned Conference Champions for the second time in one day much to the delight of all players, coaches and supporters involved!

With Cardiff Met teams in 2015 finals currently holding a 2-0 record, our Trophy and Championship finalists will be looking to add to this winning record come BIG BUCS Wednesday (25th) and Friday Night Lights (27th) next week! Watch this space….
