Sporting success celebrated at Sports Awards 2015

A total of 14 awards presented to Cardiff Met Students and Staff in a night of sporting celebration.

The annual night is now in its 37th year of celebrating sporting success and achievement at Cardiff Met. Dave Cobner, Director of Sport opened the proceedings with an emotional speech as his last Sports Awards as a full time member of staff, having attended all 37 award nights to date. 

The awards were announced as follows:

The Frank Cartmell Trophy – Best Student Administrator/Organiser
WINNER - Rebecca Conibear

  • Fundamental member of the cheerleading committee
  • Took care of all finances, transport, kit, accommodation and fees
  • Great organisation of a solely student led club of over 50 members

The Darren Griffiths Trophy – The most successful student not in the school of sport
WINNER - Hannah Davies

  • Inspirational Captain for the Women’s Squash team
  • First team number 1 who led the team to the BUCS Championship Final and Silver medal
  • 5th at BUCS Individual Championships.

The Most Improved Team for Meritorious Performance
WINNER - Men's Football 

  • Promoted into BUCS Premier South
  • Have been promoted through the Welsh Leagues the last two seasons and narrowly missed out promotion to the Welsh Premier this year
  • Achieved League of Wales accreditation status.

  

The Most Improved Individual for Meritorious Performance 
WINNER - Hannah Foxley

  • Through her 4 years at Cardiff Met she has progressed from the 4th team to a 1st team starter that made the BUCS final this year
  • Mature and experienced Vice- Captain of the 1sts
  • Also Rows for Wales so has a hectic training schedule to balance
  • BUCS Silver in Rowing pairs Regatta
  • BUCS Bronze in Rowing Singles Regatta

Services to Cardiff Met Sport for Outstanding Contributions
WINNER - Graham Haines 

  • Past 6yrs, with men’s football – administrative support, player registration, match-day programmes for the Welsh League fixtures
  • Crucial to gaining approval in the Welsh Premier League application – huge to driving the club forward during this successful period
  • 15yrs with Cricket. Current team manager of MCCU were countless young cricketers and coaches has gained from his mentoring and commitment

The President’s Cup presented at the discretion of the Cardiff Met SU President
WINNER - Athletics
The winner of this award goes to a club who consistently brings back big BUCS points for Cardiff Met, year in year out, and this year is no different. With countless individual medalists, finalists and one of the largest total members across all AU clubs; this club has proven it takes a strong club as a whole to get repeated success

  

Sport Cardiff Community Sport Award
WINNER - Samuel Harrison 

Fresher of the Year for outstanding ability
WINNERS - Jonathan Hopkins & Emily Watson

Jonathon Hopkins 

  • BUCS Indoor Bronze Medal for 3000m as a Fresher
  • Highest Cardiff Met finisher at BUCS Cross Country
  • Cardiff 10K winner
  • BUCS Outdoor Gold 300m Steeplechase

Emily Watson

  • Number 1 seed of ladies 1st team in the BUCS Premier South
  • Won majority of BUCS singles and doubles against International standard players
  • Has been no.1 in the British University rankings
  • Cardiff Met Tennis Club Champion 2015

The RHINO Teamwear Most Valuable Player 
WINNER - James Tiley

  • Has had an outstanding season for Men’s Lacrosse as a Fresher
  • 40+ goals, 40+ assists in 11 games
  • Team wouldn’t have been promoted or won the Conference Cup without him

  

RHINO Teamwear Scholarship 2015/16
WINNER - Elliot Scotcher
The worthy winner of the RHINO Teamwear Scholarship 2015/16 goes to a player for his outstanding and unrivalled performances for the Men’s Football team over the last 3 seasons since he joined Cardiff Met. He has been exceptional in his professional approach throughout the 3 years of consecutive promotions.

The Principal’s Award presented at the discretion of the Principal/
WINNER - Women's Basketball|
This team have had an historic season, competing in the newly formed Semi Professional WBBL League against the best team in the UK and winning the National Cup title having lost in the final last season. The WBBL team also won the Shield at the BCC tournament in January. BUCS teams continue to go from strength to strength as the 1st and 2nd teams won their leagues and the 1st team got to the Semi-Final of the BUCS Championship. The club are well deserved winners of this award

The Athletic Union Award of Merit 
WINNER - Women's Rugby

  • 1st team were BUCS Championship Finalists at Twickenham
  • 2nd team won their BUCS League and were finalists for second consecutive year in the Trophy

  

The Sportec Trophy for the most successful Coach
WINNERS - Christian Edwards & Robyn Jones

  • Back to back promotions through the Welsh Leagues and a strong cup run this season
  • Secured promotion to the BUCS Premier South for first time in history
  • Narrowly missed out on promotion to Welsh Premier League

The Stuart Griffiths “Team of the Year”
WINNER - Netball

  • Undefeated BUCS season in Premier South League
  • 10/10 wins and +190 goal difference
  • BUCS Championship Silver Medallists

Willmott Dixon Sports Personality of the Year
WINNER - Ieuan Lloyd

  • 4 x Gold BUCS medals a silver and a bronze
  • BUCS record for 200m Individual medley
  • Awarded “TOP BUCS MALE” at the BUCS Championships
  • 5th fastest male ever in Great Britain for 200IM
  • Commonwealth Games 2014
