Hello everyone! I am Sharon Sara Alexander – your Global Officer for the year 2022 to 2023. I am currently studying MSc in Food Science and Technology (Industry) at Cardiff Met. My role as a Global Officer started 4 months ago, and it entails representing the views of international students and acting as a key point of contact for them.

My journey started with the SU training week, which I unfortunately could not attend in person as I was back at my home in India; however, I attended the sessions online and it was very insightful and vital to my understanding of the SU.

After reaching Cardiff, the SU held a welcoming students’ session at Llandaff campus for 3 days, where we gave the students free food and told them about the SU and its functions.

Then, we had the Freshers’ Fayre, which was a huge event hosted at Cyncoed campus. There were stalls set up by different societies, sports clubs, and local businesses, and the SU had a stall of its own too. We gave out free tote bags and goodies and made sure that everyone knew that we were there to help them throughout the year.

We received an invitation to attend a private Diwali event at Sophia Gardens Cricket Club, which was hosted by the First Minister of Wales and the Honorary Consul of India in Wales. There were a range of guests including Vice Chancellors and Indian/Welsh company directors. This was a great opportunity to get to network and connect with many people from different cultures.

The SU holds a monthly meeting, where we discuss the feedback gathered from students and work on solving the issues mentioned. I also have a monthly meeting with the President of the SU to discuss my goals and achievements as a Global Officer. Currently, I am working on setting up a STAR (Student Action for Refugees) Society, which consists of a national network of students ready to volunteer and work directly and indirectly with refugees in a number of ways.

Overall, I am enjoying my role and time here at Cardiff Met, and I am excited to start working on many more ideas and events this term.
