As a student it can be difficult to hold down a part-time job during your studies, let alone thinking about your future career after university. At the beginning of my third year the realisation of graduating and entering the competitive job market hit me. So I signed up to an employability workshop through UMAX called “Principles of Success”. The workshop was run by a recruitment expert. Sally Strong who gave great advice, made me feel comfortable, and took the time to get to know each and every person who attended the workshop.

The workshop made me feel motivated not only in terms of boosting my employability for the future but it also motivated me for the here and now in terms of being the best I can be at university. As soon as I got home that day I went on the UMAX website to find out what other workshops were available.

This is where I discovered the Cardiff Met Award, which meant that I could be awarded for attending workshops, in addition to carrying out work experience. I immediately saw the benefit, and applied. I had been looking for something that would help me in the future, enhance my CV and help me to stand out from my friends on my course as the sad reality is that when we graduate, we will all be competing against each other in the same job market.

Since the ‘Principles of Success workshop’ I have attended many other workshops by Sally and another well-known recruitment expert, Aimee Bateman (I would definitely recommend Aimee’s social media for employability workshop- it is really good!) , both of these women have really inspired me and helped me to develop self-confidence in terms of my own abilities. In addition to getting to know Sally and Aimee, and listening to their advice, I have also made new friends with other students that are participating in the award. Overall I would say that the Cardiff Met Award is a great opportunity, and I feel very lucky to have had the experience, if only I had signed up sooner, but it is never too late to get involved!
