More Than Work Month Day 2

Day 2 of our NASES feature week for More Than Work Month

Every day this week as part of More Than Work Month, we are featuring a different Cardiff Met student who balances their studies with a job. They’ll tell us about their job, studies and how they balance their responsibilities as well as demonstrating how to make use of the employability and careers services on offer at Cardiff Met.

Chelsea Cinquegrani is today’s featured student and she is one the UMAX front of house team based at Cyncoed. Chelsea is 23 and a 1st year MA Sport, Body and Society student in the School of Sport. As part of the UMAX team, Chelsea is responsible for communicating with students face to face and over the phone to assist with all Student Union based enquiries. Chelsea also runs the Cardiff Met Dance Society which she believes was great for her CV and helped her to get the job when she applied through the UMAX JobShop.

Being a Masters student, Chelsea highlights the need to work whilst studying in order to survive financially as she doesn’t receive a loan for postgraduate studies. Chelsea said that working for the Students’ Union has many benefits, stating that “the SU are extremely understanding of my work load and appreciate that my studies are a priority. From experience previous employers have not been half as understanding”. Chelsea went on to say “It can be really difficult to juggle multiple areas of your life, particular if you’re studying full time. Sometimes, after a long day at work the last thing you want to do it write a 5000 word essay, but the deadline never waits”

If you too are thinking about working whilst studying, Chelsea’s top tips are to ‘Know your schedule, prioritise and don’t be afraid to ask for help early. Work hard, but don’t forget you need down time too.’ Chelsea also highlighted how useful the UMAX JobShop was in helping her to find work.
