Harm Reduction Approach to Alcohol and Other Drug Use - Our Commitment

Cardiff Metropolitan University and Cardiff Met Students’ Union work in partnership to support the positive health and wellbeing of all our students. This includes aiming to reduce the harms associated with the use of alcohol and other drugs within our student population. While the safest approach is always to limit the consumption of alcohol to Government guidance and not take other drugs, we acknowledge that some students will do so regardless and we should take measures to reduce their risk

Harm Reduction Approach to Alcohol and Other Drug Use - Our Commitment

Cardiff Metropolitan University and Cardiff Met Students’ Union work closely together to fully support the positive health and wellbeing of every student. Our partnership is dedicated to reducing the harms associated with the use of alcohol and other drugs within our student community.

We recognise that while the safest approach is always to limit alcohol consumption to Government guidance and avoid other drugs entirely, some students will use them regardless. Therefore, we are committed to implementing measures to reduce students’ risk of coming to harm and simultaneously protecting the wider student community.

Our support strategy is centred on a Harm Reduction approach. This means we focus on tackling risks and offering genuine support to students who may be struggling with their alcohol or drug consumption.

Our Policy and Approach Aims:

  • To Discourage the harmful use of alcohol and other drugs.
  • To Educate students on the effects and risks associated with alcohol and other drugs.
  • To Highlight the harm reduction guidance, information, and available support for students who are seeking help with their use.
  • To Protect the learning community from the harm and risks associated with the problematic use of alcohol or other drugs.

Clean Sport Commitment 🏅

Cardiff Metropolitan University also fully adopts the UK Anti-Doping (UKAD) and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) position that cheating in sport, including doping, is fundamentally contrary to the spirit of sport. We believe this undermines the otherwise positive impact that sport has on society. You can find full details in our Clean Sport Commitment Statement.
