No More £20 Registration Fee for Graduation, another huge WIN from your Students’ Union.

Using your feedback – we challenged the university over the introduction of a £20 fee for attending your own graduation. Now all graduates for 25/26 will no longer have to pay the £20, and any who already have will be refunded!

With no prior consultation with students or the students’ union on this matter, we challenged and outlined your concerns to the university –as a result they have agreed to place a hold on the registration fee for the 25/26 graduates.

With this being one of the first examples within the UK of such a behaviour, we were incredibly concerned about the precedent this sets for the wider sector. We also do not believe that our university nor wider universities should start placing economic barriers to such staple events of the university experience like graduation.

Whilst we are happy this fee has been removed for this year – we are aware it is just passing the problem down to the next cohort. Over the next year, we will be looking to challenge the university to ensure graduation remains economically viable.

What future graduations may look like:

  • £20 Registration Fee
  • (approx.) £40 Cap and Gown Rental

With the potential for:

  • Additional tickets (if needed for family and friends)
  • Travel and Accommodation (for those travelling from afar)
  • Commemorative photography

Which could all add up to an expensive graduation ceremony.

Your Students’ Union Officers will continue to challenge the university on hidden course cost fees, graduation costs and support them in making sure the academic experience is the best it can possibly be.

From your Students’ Union Officers:

Souparnika Parameswaran Namboothiri, Student President
Vaishnavi Chopde, Vice President Education.
