What is a mitigating circumstance?

A mitigating circumstance is sometimes called an exceptional personal circumstance or a technical error that has affected your ability to submit work by the deadline. This could be due to but not limited to: sickness, beareavement, working commitments, and technical difficulties.

How do I do apply for mitigating circumstances?

All students may submit within the late submission window (up to 5 working days following the deadline). Submitting within the late submission window will cap your potential mark at the threshold pass mark.

However, up to four times per academic level, you are able to submit within the late window and use one of your mit circs permits to uncap the mark (Per individual piece of assesment). Meaning the work will be marked as if received on time.

You will be able to do this through the submission portal for your assesment, and must be done within 5 working days of the deadline.

Mitigating circumstances are not able to be used for :
- Exams
- In class tests
- Presentations
- Practical assesments

The eligibiity of using mit circs will be specified on the relevant assesment and feedback page on Moodle.

Do i need to provide evidence?

No, when using one of your 4 permits you are able to self declare the circumstances which caused you issues submitting on the submission date.

If I have mitigating circumstances over a period of time with multiple assesments do i need to apply multiple permits?

Yes, you will need to use a permit for each piece.

Can I use one of my permits on a secondary or third reassesment submission?

No, however a standard 24 hour late submission window will be enforced.

I've submitted a permit, can i withdraw it?

No, once used it cannot be withdrawn.

I've used all my permits - is there a way to get more?

Once a student has used all four late submission permits, any further adjustment to assessment deadlines can only be considered and approved via engagement with an appropriate support procedure. This may be under any of the below policies:
