Emergency Response Volunteer

Could you help respond to emergencies in your local area?

Location: Cardiff, South East Wales

Commitment: This service operates 24 hours/7 days per week. Volunteers are asked to do at least 2 x 6 hour shifts per week.
Must attend monthly team meetings, held in the evenings, 7-9pm.

Our volunteers have been providing emotional and practical support to those affected during emergencies such as Aberfan, the London 7/7 bombings and more recently the Manchester Arena bombings and Grenfell fire. The Red Cross doesn't only respond to large-scale emergencies, we respond to an emergency on average every four hours ranging from house fires and floods to power cuts and water shortages.

What would I be doing?

You will be helping people prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies. Every individual affected by an emergency will need different support from us to help them recover, below are some examples of what you might support with:

  • Helping communities prepare for extreme weather events such as flooding or snow storms
  • Providing practical support such as distributing clothing or food after flooding
  • Providing emotional support to people who have been evacuated due to a fire
