Telephone or Postal Befriender Volunteer for RNID's Live Well with Hearing Loss project
The Role
One in six people in Wales is living with hearing loss. The Live Well with Hearing Loss service supports people who are deaf or have hearing loss or tinnitus and is an initiative newly-funded by the Welsh Government and delivered by RNID in partnership with Centre of Sign-Sight-Sound.
We are looking for volunteers to provide support and friendship as part of our befriending service. As a Live Well with Hearing Loss Befriender, you will phone service-users at a regular time each week, or write letters on a regular basis, and provide essential companionship for those who are lonely, socially isolated or who may not be able to leave their home easily.
Benefits
You will have the opportunity to meet people in different situations and make a real difference to the people you support. You'll receive training and may learn new skills relevant to your role. You'll gain experience volunteering in the third sector and an experience to improve your CV.
Time Commitment
Flexible - around an hour a week ongoing (for a minimum of 10 weeks).
After initial training, we expect that you would be able to commit to a minimum of one hour a week for telephone befriending. This has to be between the hours of 9am-4pm on a weekday at a time agreed by you, the service-user and the Volunteer Coordinator. Postal befriending is variable and flexible.
There will be regular one-to-one support sessions for all volunteers with the Volunteer Coordinator and there may be occasional mandatory refresher training. You may also be invited to attend volunteer social events or events to highlight the project at which attendance is optional.
Where does it take place?
This befriending role takes place from your own home.
The application process
You must first complete the RNID online application form. You will then be invited to an informal interview with the Volunteer Coordinator. If successful, you will be asked to provide two references. Once these have been satisfied you will be invited to attend mandatory induction and training for your role. You will then be matched with a service user to start your befriending.
