Job Role        

The role will suit students as well as someone who may already be in full or part time employment who are seeking some occasional weekend work with this interesting and rewarding position. The events are mainly on Sundays, occasionally on Saturdays or weekday evenings and you will be required to cover approximately two events a month mainly between April and December and occasional further work available throughout the year.

You will usually be expected to be working for around 6- 8 hours per event, although this may occasionally be longer depending on the nature or geography of the event (in this situation overtime will be paid) .

If overnight accommodation is required, this will be paid for by Welsh Cycling and reasonable out of pocket expenses will be supported.

An events vehicle will be provided to attend each event and this will be based at Welsh Cycling’s base in Newport, South Wales – the Events Support Operator will be expect to make their own way to and from Newport.

The successful candidate will be required to

  • Travel to the event location
  • Take full responsibility for the event equipment and ensure that all items are returned after the event
  • Set up and test the timing system at the start and finish lines
  • Set up the necessary events equipment, including gazebo, sponsor branding materials etc.
  • Provide updated finish times for all riders
  • Return the events equipment back to Newport after the event

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Experience with computers
  • Excellent customer service & communication skills
  • Good ICT Skills with familiarity with Microsoft Excel
  • Full UK driving licence (C1 categories are desirable)

  • Enjoys working outside
  • Ability to remain calm and organised under pressure whilst being assertive where necessary
  • Excellent communicator, with the ability to work with people at all levels

  • Reliable and flexible
  • Sense of humour

The following skills, experience and personal characteristics are desirable but not essential as full training and onsite telephone support will be provided

Desirable Skills and Experience:

  • Previous experience in event management
  • Volunteering at sports events
  • Participation in multisport, mass participation or local running or cycling events
  • Ability to both speak Welsh

Desirable Personal Characteristics:

  • Enjoys being the first point of contact for customers
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Confidence in offering advice to clients
