Are you passionate about student wellbeing and want to make a real difference to student life at Cardiff Met? We’re looking for a motivated and community-minded student to join us as our Student Drug & Alcohol Harm Reduction Coordinator. 

You’ll work across both the Students’ Union and the University to support positive, open, and proactive conversations about drug and alcohol use. You’ll help shape harm reduction campaigns, lead student engagement activity, and support the delivery of interventions that protect and enhance student wellbeing.

You’ll gain valuable experience in coordination, communications, and partnership working, all while helping to improve student life and wellbeing at Cardiff Met. You'll also receive support and guidance from senior staff at both the SU and the University throughout your time in the role.

What you’ll do:

  • Help shape practical on-campus wellbeing interventions
  • Create social media content and news articles to raise awareness of harm reduction work
  • Represent Cardiff Met students at city-wide Community Alcohol Partnership (CAP) meetings
  • Plan and deliver engaging events during the Welcome period and beyond
  • Relaunch and coordinate the internal Cardiff Met steering group on substance use
  • Collect and share student views through surveys and focus groups, analysing data and identifying trends

Description of the responsibilities and tasks undertaken in this role.

  • Attend city-wide Community Alcohol Partnership (CAP) meetings to provide a student perspective and share Cardiff Met updates, with support from Cardiff Met staff.
  • Attend City Partnership working group meetings to consider substance use work across Cardiff.
  • Relaunch and support the internal steering group for substance use at Cardiff Met.
  • Collect student opinions on substance use.
  • Assist with the analysis of data from the student drug and alcohol survey.
  • Produce proactive news articles and social media to inform students of the work being done on substance use.
  • Assist with the planning and delivery of alcohol awareness events, especially during the welcome period. 
  • Contribute to the development of on-campus interventions to support student wellbeing.

This role will coordinate communication between students, university staff, external partners, and the wider student community. This involves communicating with fellow students to gather opinions and feedback and engaging with Cardiff Met staff and the internal steering group on substance use.

 

Written communications, including news articles, awareness materials, and social media posts.  Verbal communication in meetings and student engagement sessions.

Service Delivery: 

  • Engaging with students to gather opinions.
  • Coordinating the planning and delivery of substance use awareness events.
  • Providing clear and supportive communications on substance use and harm reduction.

In this role, the individual will be responsible for coordinating effective communication channels between various internal and external stakeholders. 

 

Internal stakeholders: Cardiff Met Students' Union, Cardiff Metropolitan University wellbeing services, harm reduction steering group, SU and University marketing and communications teams

 

External Stakeholders: Community Alcohol Partnership (CAP) and Cardiff & Vale Drug & Alcohol Service (CAVDAS).

The role primarily involves supporting decision-making processes rather than making independent or strategic decisions.

In this role, strong planning and organisation skills are essential for managing multiple tasks and supporting various initiatives. However, the role focuses on coordination rather than having full autonomy over strategic planning or budget management.
