A Conversation that Matters
Movember ambassador Krish Maini shared his personal experiences with mental health and reflected on the positive impact Movember has had on his life, explaining how the charity has supported him and holds such personal significance.
'I struggled with my mental health when I was around 15, and then found Movember, it pretty much saved me'. Krish highlighted ‘if we find out one of our mates or teammates are struggling, it’s something that they can now openly talk about’ showing the significance of Movember on SU sports clubs.
Chris Cole from Men's Cricket detailed the clubs aim in fundraising and explained the impact Movember has had in their community.
‘If you show that one person that they can talk about their mental health, then it might save another person. I think raising money and having a voice around the University, doing big events and coming together with different societies is important’.
Chris also explained how past fundraisers have brought the Cardiff Met community together through sports. ‘Last year, we played a football game against the rugby team and afterwards, we went to the pub together, sat down, enjoyed each other's company, and just had different conversations with different people’.
Beyond the Mo
Whilst fundraising totals remain an important focus, both Krish and Chris emphasised that it is just as much about the people affected by cancer and mental illnesses.
‘I think the money is a separate goal, but I'd rather raise less and have students get involved and feel safer at uni and feel like they’ve gained something from the month. Rather than a large amount of money being donated and they haven’t really seen the impact’.
Chris explained how impactful Movember can be for students when they are struggling.
‘I think it’s important to us within a club at university where you’re away from family, to just encourage different conversations with each other, whether that’s asking about someone's day, it’s just as simple as that. Something so simple as growing a mustache can really encourage conversations and bring everyone together’.
