Sports Awards 2016

The annual Sports Awards was hosted on May 4th to celebrate all the Archer success throughout the year

Another year of sporting success at Cardiff Met was celebrated by the annual Athletic Union Sports Awards. This year hosted by the due of Dave Cobner and Neil Hennessy. 

The awards were announced as follows:

The Frank Cartmell Trophy – Best Student Administrator/Organiser 
WINNER - Seth Davies - Swimming/Cycling/Triathlon
•    Given uncountable hours to the running of the three different teams he is involved with
•    Coaches multiple sessions across the different seasons
•    Organises all the administration of the clubs and has done this for a few years
•    A fantastic link to the teams he is involved in and an advocate for each of them

The Darren Griffiths Trophy – The most successful student not in the school of sport
WINNER - Annureet Bajwa - Men’s Basketball
•    Outstanding commitment to the club over the last 4yrs in both BUCS & National League
•    Welsh Senior Men’s National Team at two European Championships – hoping to add a third this summer
•    Led National League team to South West league title this year

The Most Improved Team – An award recognising meritorious performance 
WINNER - Men’s and Women’s Badminton    
•    Men won their BUCS league and gained promotion
•    Men were also crowned Conference Cup champions
•    Women won their BUCS league and gained promotion
•    Bother teams will now compete in Western 1B next season

The Most Improved Individual – An award recognising Meritorious Performance
WINNER - Chloe O’Connor – Women’s Football    
•    Got her first full Welsh International cap vs. Cyprus
•    Instrumental to the team becoming Welsh Premier and BUCS South Prem league champions
•    Scored 12 goals in the Welsh Premiership

Services to Cardiff Met Sport - For Outstanding Contributions to student sport
WINNER - Luke Hawker - Hockey

The Athletic Union Award of Merit
WINNER - Cheerleading & Dance    
•    Have grown from 10 to 52 members over the last few years
•    Have put Cardiff Met on the map for cheerleading and Dance
•    Their success this year has led to them taking over the trophy cabinet in the hall of fame!



Sport Cardiff Community Sport Award
WINNER - Laura Parker

Pinnacle Campus Sport Coordinator of the Year
WINNER - Peter Sixsmith 

The President’s Cup – BUCS Team of the Year
WINNER - Women’s Rugby 1sts
•    Won BUCS Premier South league by a convincing 11pts
•    Beat Northumbria 20-5 in the BUCS Championship Final at Twickenham
•    Semi-finalists in the BUCS Championship 7’s
•    This year was their 10th BUCS Championship!



Fresher of the Year – A first year student who has shown outstanding ability
WINNER - Conor Lees - Trampolining
•    Won Gold at the Trampolining BUCS Championships
•    Contributed a huge amount of points to help the men’s team achieve BUCS gold
•    Plenty more to come from him!

WINNER - Anna Gordon - Athletics
•    Won gold in Pole Vault at the BUCS Indoor Championships 
•    BUCS Outdoor Pole Vault cancelled due to weather
•    Won a medal at the UK Senior Championships and set a Junior National record in doing so

The RHINO Teamwear Most Valuable Player - The most influential team member
WINNER - Sam Wade - Triathlon 
•    Gold in the BUCS Sprint Triathlon 2015
•    Gold in the BUCS Standard Triathlon 2015
•    4 Bronze medals in BUCS Duathlon since being at Cardiff Met
•    Represented GB at World University Games 

The Principal’s Award presented at the discretion of the Vice Chancellor
WINNER - Women’s Football 

The Sportec Trophy – Coach of the Year
WINNER - Dave Tonge - Swimming
•    An extremely passionate coach who is determined to make each swimmer better
•    Coached the “A” team to 8th in the UK – their highest ever ranking 
•    Helped the “B” team achieve 3rd place and promotion
•    Has been massive in the success and growth of the club who are now number 1 in Wales!

The Stuart Griffiths “Club of the Year”
WINNER - Men’s Football  
•    1st team have gained promotion into the Welsh Premiership for the first time in Cardiff Met history
•    2nd team - won reserves Welsh League title and promotion in their BUCS league
•    3rd and 4th teams had solid seasons while the 5th team won their league and reached the semi-final of the conference cup!
•    The club amassed 107 BUCS points to sit 5th in the BUCS rankings

Willmott Dixon Sports Personality of the Year
WINNER - Adele Nicoll - Athletics
•    Gold in Shot Putt at the BUCS Indoor Championships with a PB
•    Gold in Shot Putt at BUCS Outdoor Championships  with Club record
•    Silver in Discus at BUCS Outdoor Championships
•    Only a fresher!
•    Won a medal at the UK Senior Championships and set a Junior National record in doing so
•    Ranked 3rd in UK for Senior Women and 1st in the UK
•    Previous BBC Wales Junior Sport Personality
