On the 5th March 2020, Cardiff Met Students’ Union, Sport Cardiff, Met Res Life and Cardiff Met Global Engagement held their annual Fairtrade Sport Spectacular at Cyncoed Campus 3G.

The tournament, created collaboratively by Fay Brinsdon (Cardiff Met SU) and Natalie Buckland (Global Engagement), is now something of a staple in the annual Cardiff Met campaign calendar and this year exceeded all expectation. Indeed, our friends from Oasis Cardiff, were looking to retain the title they fought for last year and were hot favourites to repeat this feat going into the 2020 edition.  However, this year they had serious competition from our Cardiff Met students and staff representing Met Res Life and our very own Students’ Union Volunteering/Environmental students.

In total, 6 teams, with over 50 players and stakeholders enjoying the day battled it out for the trophy, but more importantly the title of Fairtrade Sport Spectacular Champions. Teams from Oasis Cardiff (x2), Met Res Life (x3) and SU Environmental/Volunteering.

It came down to our very own SU Volunteering/Environmental side and the favourites Oasis Cardiff in the final and in the end the favourites prevailed with a dominant display, winning 3-1.

With food laid by the student union for every team and official present, the trophy was presented to Oasis Cardiff in Centro, Lower Lounge in Cardiff Met SU.

The tournament was a huge success, with the important messages of FairTrade, University Mental Health and Global week emphasised throughout the proceedings. There was a great sense of community and belonging with everybody involved thoroughly enjoying their time.

A huge thank you to Fay Brinsdon, James Horwood, Natalie Buckland, Cecillia Martell and Christine Patten for arranging such a fantastic event that was extremely well received by all.
