Harm Reduction Approach to Alcohol and Other Drug Use - Our Commitment

Cardiff Metropolitan University and Cardiff Met Students’ Union work in partnership to support the positive health and wellbeing of all our students. This includes aiming to reduce the harms associated with the use of alcohol and other drugs within our student population. While the safest approach is always to limit the consumption of alcohol to Government guidance and not take other drugs, we acknowledge that some students will do so regardless and we should take measures to reduce their risk of coming to harm, as well as protecting the wider student community. Cardiff Met’s partnership with the Students’ Union focuses on a Harm Reduction approach to support students who may struggle with alcohol or drug consumption.

Our policy and approach aims include:

  • To discourage the harmful use of alcohol and other drugs. To educate students on the effects and risks associated with alcohol and other drugs.
  • To highlight the harm reduction guidance, information and support available to students who are struggling with their use.
  • To protect the learning community from harm and risks associated with the problematic use of alcohol or other drugs.

Cardiff Metropolitan University also adopts the UK Anti-Doping and World Anti- Doping Agency (WADA) position that cheating, including doping, in sport is fundamentally contrary to the spirit of sport, undermining the otherwise positive impact of sport on society. See our Clean Sport Commitment Statement.
