Introduction to the Club
Cardiff Met Badminton Club provides a fully inclusive environment for both performance and recreational players. Whether you are an elite performer looking to improve your game or someone who is looking to play for fun and meet new friends the badminton club is the place to be.
The badminton club has consistently improved its performance in the BUCs league over the last few years currently having the girls and boys teams in the 1A division. We have recently introduced a new men’s second team due to the increase in numbers to the squad.
The badminton program is currently led by Badminton Performance Director Nic Strange a UKCC L3 coach and former Welsh Commonwealth Games 2014 Athlete. Nic has been with the University through his undergraduate studies and is now lecturing and coaching in the University. Alongside this Nic is Junior National Coach for the Welsh Team.
Cardiff Met provides significant assistance to players who are on a performance pathway while undertaking their studies at Cardiff Met. Alongside the specific on court sessions in our new state of the art facilities we can offer strength and conditioning, sport phycology, on site physiotherapy/massage and video analysis to our players. Furthermore Cardiff Met has a partnership with Badminton Wales who can offer extra sessions to train alongside the Welsh Senior Squad.
The University provides a range of scholarships available which support performance player’s development. Click here to find out more about performance sport at Cardiff Met.
The recreational side of the club provides an environment where players can come along and enjoy playing badminton in a relaxed surrounding. The recreational club takes place once a week and gives players the opportunity to try a new sport and meet new people.
As a badminton player you may want to increase your knowledge of badminton in a coaching capacity and enhance your CV. Cardiff Met is able to provide club players with the opportunity to develop their coaching in the Badminton Academy. The Badminton Academy is run by Nic who is able to mentor and pass on his experience of coaching while you coach junior players.
Alongside coaching players the University is able to direct players to where they can complete their coaching qualification. If players are currently undertaking one of the undergraduate programs in the School of Sport which offers APT and they have chosen badminton, the program incorporates UKCC criteria into the lectures. Once completed the player only has to complete an assessment to pass the UKCC L1 qualification.
