Club Background
Basketball is an explosive sport filled with speed, power and high scoring games, sure to bring excitement to all, whether playing or spectating. Cardiff Met Archers Basketball Club has an extensive Senior Men's programme playing at a variety of levels, so there is definitely a place for anyone who wishes to develop their skills and compete. The programme has eight men's teams across BUCS, Basketball England National League (NBL), West England of Basketball Association (WEBBA), South Wales Basketball League (SWBA) and Basketball Wales National League (BWNL).
NBL Division Two & Three (National League)
The flagship team for the Archers Men's programme is our NBL D2 side playing weekend fixtures in the Basketball England National League across the South of England. The squad is coached by James Dawe and the players on our roster include current Cardiff Met students, Cardiff Met graduates, and players who have come through our Academy system. A number of the squad are high pedigree players who have received caps for the Wales national team. The NBL D3 team is head coached by Stefan Rosier and competes across the South West.
British Universities and Colleges' Sport (BUCS - University League)
Our BUCS programme consists of 3 teams playing on Wednesday afternoons against other universities in South Wales and the South West of England. We are currenlty completing in BUCS Premier South for the first time in the histoy of the programme, and two teams in Tier 3, with the 2nd team aiming for promotion this season. There is a commited group of coaches across those teams, many of which have previously studied at Cardiff Met, with James Dawe leading on the BUCS Prem team, and former Italian professional player Sev Tiberi coaching the second team.
SWBA and WEBBA
There are two 'local league' teams, with one playing across south Wales and the other across the wider Bristol/Gloucestershire area. The WEBBA team is mostly made up on some National League players, BUCS 1st team players, and high potential juniors, with the SWBA team focusing on 2nd and 3rd BUCS team players.
BWNL
Our Basketball Wales National League team won the 2022/23 BWNL, with Men's Programme lead James Dawe winning the MVP of the final. This league has teams from across Wales, from out west to up north, and features a combination of National League players, international students, and local domestic talent.
TRAINING TIMES
Training times for BUCS are 8.30pm-10pm on a Monday for new players - please contact the Club before attending.
For those wishing to play National League, this is through invitation only. Please email the Club to express your interest, and include details about your previous basketball experience.
Junior Basketball Academy
Cardiff Met Archers Basketball Club also has an extensive Junior Basketball Academy which gives senior players the opportunity to be involved in as coaches, officials and team managers. Players have the opportunity to gain qualifications, gain experience, develop their CV and support their academic studies through paid or voluntary work with the Academy. The work of our students with the Academy allows the club to move forward from within and develop the Archers Family feel that is one of the club's core values.
