“Should Cardiff Met Students' Union Change the logo for student sport?”
The Students’ Union hereby gives notice that an all-member referendum shall be held between the 18th of May and 20th of May.
The timeline shall be as follows:
- Voting opens 18th May 10am
- Voting closes 20th May 5pm
- Complaints deadline 20th May 7pm
- Expenses deadline (For campaign groups) 10th december 7pm.
The question for the referenda shall be “Should Cardiff Met SU change the logo for student sport”. Members will be able to respond YES or NO to the question on this page once voting is live.
A minimum turnout of 350 voting students is required for the vote to be binding.
Vote context:
A YES vote would mean the logo would be updated to the Revised Archer Logo and would then be the image used across student sport, and would be updated and rolled out onto all kit for teams over time.
A NO vote would mean the logo currently on sports kits for teams – the Traditional Archer Logo – stays as it is, but the Revised Logo can still be retained by Met Sport and used for their internal branding.
YES/NO Rationales:
Yes (adopt the revised Archer logo) Statement:

The revised Archer logo, introduced in 2024, has been designed to reflect the evolution of student sport and the changing identity of Cardiff Met in a modern era. Its design (while maintaining the Archer symbol and the Maroon and Gold colours) draws on the same legacy and reinterprets it through a contemporary lens. It incorporates the important values of skill, courage, and hwyl (meaning: joy, enthusiasm, passion, and high spirits), while presenting a modern, gender-neutral archer that reflects principles of equality, equity, and inclusivity. Having already been widely implemented across Met Sport branding, it aims to clear and consistent visual representation of the University’s sporting culture today, reflecting its diversity, ambitions, and the direction in which Cardiff Met sport continues to develop. It hopes to bring all athletes together under a single visual identity and reinforcing the concept of “One Cardiff Met” that will represent the University for generations to come, while remaining connected to its historical roots.
No (keep the traditional Archer logo) Statement:

The original Archer logo, developed in the 1970s alongside similar emblems at institutions such as Loughborough and Leeds, represents a significant part of the University’s sporting heritage. Its design (featuring a strong male archer holding a bow and arrow within a laurel wreath) draws inspiration from the legacy of the Welsh Longbowmen and the classical traditions of athletic excellence. It incorporates enduring values of strength, discipline, and competitive achievement that have long been associated with sport at Cardiff Met. Over the decades, this emblem has become a recognisable and enduring symbol, connecting generations of athletes and teams through a shared identity. It has been a consistent and established visual representation of the University’s sporting culture, reflecting its history, achievements, and the foundations on which its reputation has been built.
