Stef Kelly

Why should you vote for me?

I’m passionate, driven, determined, proactive and approachable, these are all the types of traits you would expect a candidate to say when running in an election? Although this does not tell you why I am running for the role of President.

I am running for President this year as I want to continue representing the students and make sure that the student voice is heard and the overall student experience continues to improve year on year. I know that I’ve had an amazing experience here at Cardiff Met and want students to be able to have a great experience here as well.

Also I am not to just after the title of being Students’ Union President, but I wish to continue and complete the initiatives that I have started this year as the Students’ Union Vice-President.

Initiatives which I am looking to complete from this year are:

  • Continue working on establishing new media platforms (such as video diaries, podcast etc) in which students can voice their opinion and experiences.

  • Carry on the developments with our societies in our new society tiering system, as well support our new and existing societies expand and increase their membership and engagement.

  • Improve the understanding and relationship with academic staff to make them aware of the specific support we can offer here at the Students’ Union.

  • Alongside the initiatives which I wish to continue on from this year there are several new ones which I would wish to address next year:

  • Increase interactions between our home and international students to promote a better campus culture.

  • As I feel improved relationships will not only improve the social experience at university but will have a positive impact on the academic and learning experiences.

  • Campus Transport and Parking- these have been two long standing problems for not just students but staff as well.

  • External Funding for our Clubs, Societies and Teams – explore funding and sponsorship opportunities which do not conflict with the Students’ Union.

  • Improve communications between the University and Students.

  • Increase the amount of activities happening at both Campuses.

  • Promote Campus Community

I look forward to answering any questions that any of you may.

Kind Regards,

Stefan Kelly

Vice President Candidate's Manifestos

Phillip Smith

The best thing about Cardiff Met is there’s something for everyone, but sometimes university life moves so quickly we don’t always know what’s available to us. My name is Phil and I’m here to work with you.

I am an MSc Health Psychology Student having graduated from Cardiff Met in 2013 after studying BSc Psychology. A proud Cardiff Met Student for almost 5 years, I have watched our university’s rapid development since 2010, and have had the privilege to help it along the way.

Having actively worked within the union and throughout the university to improve the standard of personal tutoring, and currently student employability, I have a strong insight into what needs to be done to enhance student life at Cardiff Met.

BOOST CAMPUS COMMUNITY – Community spirit at Cardiff Met is more important now than ever before – we are two campuses instead of three, with more and more students each year. I will work with you to improve the standard of campus communication so you know what’s going on all year round while our union continues to enhance the student voice.

CAMPUS TRANSPORT – More frequent and reliable buses throughout Cardiff Met will drive our satisfaction upwards and make the difference in campus life that we deserve. Cardiff Met has more and more students joining each year and campuses should be accessible whatever the time of day.

STRENGTHEN ACADEMIC STANDARDS – Every student should be supported to the same standard regardless of programme or academic school. Assignment feedback and protocols, tutoring and career advice need to be clearer and more transparent so we can get the most out of our degree.

EQUAL EXPERIENCE FOR EACH SCHOOL – We pay the same fees, so we deserve the same experience. Cardiff Met has a hugely diverse population and every student should feel they belong. Equal access to the same facilities and support across each school will also ease the demand of our workloads and become more balanced with our other commitments. I will also continue to support sport and societies on Cyncoed and Llandaff campus and ensure starting a society is both smooth and fun!

If you want a candidate who is friendly, attentive and approachable, then a vote for Phil is a vote for #FulPhilMent.

Manifesto Ideas

  • Cross campus interaction. Should I be elected I will try to improve events/communication with students between both campuses. In regards of academics, I want to try and make inter-library loans possible across campuses. Books that are at either campus could be ordered and transported on a daily basis.
  • Healthier SU food menus. Should I become SU Vice President I will force the idea of healthier food in Centro and Zen. I think this would be beneficial for the student experience and for the business of both Zen and Centro.
  • More annual student events. Currently, the only student event that brings both campuses together is Drink The Bar Dry. I feel that due to the lack of cross campus events there is a real gap between the campuses. If I was to be elected I would try to create more events that are suitable for all students at Cardiff Metropolitan in search of a greater student experience. An example of this would be to promote the Zambia charity project across both campuses to help raise money and further interaction between all students.
  • More social/quiet working areas. Both campuses are limited to areas for students to socialise other than the SU’s. Should you elect me as the SU vice president I would strive to gain more areas suited for both socialising between lectures or are to study.
  • Free cash withdrawals. All students want free cash withdrawals as it seems criminal to waste money withdrawing cash. Should I be elected, I will try to get cash withdrawals free of charge.
  • Interaction of home students and international students. Gaining feedback from students and from personal experience, the is often a lack of interaction between international and home students in and out of lectures. I feel that it would be beneficial to all students if we could encourage interaction between all students and expand our friendship groups. If I was to be elected I would try to organise events that encouraged more interaction to make a better atmosphere around the university.
  • Money for clubs/societies. The university is willing to offer support to existing and new clubs/societies. If I was to be elected I would ensure that all club/societies were made aware of the possible funding, or help them to gain funding from external sources if possible and it fits in with the rules and regulations of the university.

Tom Wright

The Wright Guy for You

Ever since beginning my Graphic Communication degree at Cardiff Met I have had an active role in ensuring your Student Voice is heard and listened to. By working as a Lead Rep for two years and a School Rep for Art and Design this year, I believe that I have shown enthusiasm and passion for the role, and I don’t want it to stop here. Getting involved in every extra curricular activity I can has seriously improved my student experience and it is something I want to push and actively encourage next year. Having a part time job, being a member of different societies (LGBT+, Type Club) and joining a sports team (Trampolining) has made my time at university busy, but ever so rewarding.

It is this active engagement in the extracurricular that I wish to push for by giving clubs and societies a bigger voice, not only on campus, but online also. Letting people find out what is going on and when, in the quickest possible way will hopefully put clubs and societies at the heart of youruniversity experience. Whilst raising societies profiles, I also wish to incorporate sports onto Llandaff campus, as joining a sports team was easily one of the best things I did at university, and if a creative student like myself can join a sports team, then anyone can.

All the schools at Cardiff Met have had some great success recently and now is not the time to relax, we need to keep pushing the bar higher by keeping up those high academic standards and ensuring that your student experience is something you will remember for life. With the ‘wright’ attitude, together, we can push this university and the Students’ Union to the best it has ever been!

There couldn’t be a Students’ Union without students, so it is essential that your voice and your opinions are at the heart of what the SU does. My passion for ensuring every voice is heard comes from a belief that everything can improved. If you raise and issue, I will guarantee that it will be listened to and acted upon in a reliable and helpful manner.
