Even though March 8th may officially be International Women’s Day, I think you’d agree with me in saying that celebrating and supporting the cultural, economic, political and social achievements of women globally is an everyday responsibility.

Whether you’re running a campaign, hosting an event, donating to a female-focused charity or reporting an achievement, there are countless ways we can mark the significance of International Women’s Day (IWD). In its essence, IWD encourages people of all ages, backgrounds and genders to initiate conversations about gender inequality and women’s achievements into mainstream channels and consider:

“What can we do to make the world a more equal place?”

One way we can do this is through seeing women in senior elected positions. Having female leaders in such influential settings enables them to not only advance career aspirations of all women, but to also serve as role models for anyone and everyone. It also invites for a diversified workplace and this in itself was the reason I wanted to represent members as the SU’s Part-Time Equality & Diversity Officer. My entire role is based on easing any feelings of difference students may be experiencing and promoting the spirit of equality and diversity throughout Cardiff Met, generating broader societal impacts that benefit both men and women. I have had the benefit of working alongside such powerful women (and men), who put in every effort to take action on what students want to see and what they strongly believe in and its individuals like this I consider my role models.

International Women’s Day belongs to everyone. Make it your day and do the best you can to make a positive difference for all the women out there.
