"As my time as Lead School Representative for the Cardiff School of Technologies comes to an end, I've had the chance to think about how rewarding and important this journey has been for me. It has been an honour to serve in this role because it has given me the chance to speak for my classmates, highlight student voices, and help make the larger university community better.
Building Community Through Culture
One of the most memorable highlights of my term was co-leading the Diwali Event. As president and co-founder of the Cardiff Met Asian Society, I collaborated with the Cardiff Met Students’ Union to ensure that the event truly celebrated cultural diversity, fostered a sense of belonging, and brought the community together through food, music, dance, and shared traditions. Witnessing the community come together in that moment was a powerful reminder of how vital representation and inclusion are in shaping a meaningful student experience.
Supporting Career Development
In addition to cultural work, I focused heavily on enhancing career opportunities for students in CST. I collaborated with the Careers Team and the Associate Dean Student Engagement (ADSE) to organise:
- CV drop-in sessions
- Career-focused workshops in the Nexus
- And helped plan the CST Careers Fayre, a major event that connected students with employers and industry professionals.
These events provided students with practical skills, personalised feedback, and opportunities to start shaping their post-university journeys.
Listening to Student Voices
Ensuring students felt heard was always a top priority. So, we introduced feedback boards and suggestion boxes in the Nexus to encourage anonymous input on issues, ideas, and concerns. This feedback allowed me to bring real, student-driven insight to meetings with faculty members, helping inform discussions and decisions at the school level.
Juggling Commitments In & Out Of the Office
Balancing the responsibilities of a School Rep alongside academics wasn’t easy, especially as I was also representing the university in BUCS cricket. Attending practices, matches, and club meetings meant learning to manage my time carefully. But in the end, it was worth it. These experiences helped shape my sense of discipline, teamwork, and personal growth.
A Message for Future Reps and Students
To all current and future reps, be bold and take initiative. This role is what you make of it. Listen to your classmates, speak up for what matters, and don’t be afraid to ask for support. To all current and future students, get involved. Say yes to opportunities. Join societies, attend events, volunteer, and explore your passions. Your university experience goes beyond lectures. This is the time to grow, build networks, and leave your own mark.
Final Thoughts
Being the Lead School Rep for the Cardiff School of Technologies has been one of the most fulfilling parts of my university experience. I’m proud of what has been achieved, and I’m grateful to every student, staff member, and colleague who supported and collaborated with me, and thank you for trusting me to represent you!”
