Third year Sport and Physical Education student, Ben Whitworth won gold at this year's BUCS National Championships and we caught up with him to see how the championships went.
'The championships went great. We arrived on Thursday evening and weighed in first thing on Friday, there was only myself and one other lad in my weight category, therefore the bout was a straight final and scheduled for Sunday. Initially I was disappointing as the hype for the bout was then extended a further 2 days but it was well worth the wait in the end. In the build up to the bout, I knew little about the lad I was boxing apart from that he was shorter than me, so planned on using my longer range to my advantage; and did so effectively as the referee stopped the contest in the 2nd round after giving him a 2nd eight count, resulting in me winning VIA a 2nd round TKO.
Massive thanks to Student Union Sport Union for entering and supporting me throughout the competition, but also a big thanks to Jimmi and the coaching team down at Cardiff University for allowing me to train alongside them and facilitating my development to achieve Gold in the BUCS National Championships.'
Congratulations again from everyone at Cardiff Met SU Sport Ben!
